Kathryn Matthews
“I originally became fascinated with the shapes and vibrancy of harbours whilst painting
in my portside studio in Rotterdam many years ago. These days, my interest has extended
to all things coastal. I work and live on Shoreham Beach with my family and am lucky to
be able to combine my love of travelling and painting.
I draw whilst out and about and use this as a framework for my pictures. It is usually
what’s left out of these drawings, however, that creates the interest. Having to rely on
fragments of memory, allowing compositions to be infused by reminiscence. The painting
takes on a life of its own and often has many reincarnations before it reaches its end.”

Kathryn Matthews has been exhibiting for ten years in leading galleries around the UK and
has also exhibited in New York, Paris and Dubai. Commissions include paintings for
P&O’s - Arcadia, ASK Restaurants and Thomsons. Her work is also held in collections by
Cambridge Hospital and Royal Bank of Scotland.
